Some children struggle with reading comprehension. They may be able to read the words on the page, but they do not fully understand, remember, or explain what they just read.
At the same time, many of these same children also struggle with emotional regulation. They may have tantrums, overreactions, irritability, mood swings, difficulty calming down, or intense responses that seem bigger than the situation calls for.
These are two separate struggles, and if your child demonstrates either of them, or both, then it might reveal a weakness of the part of the brain that connects these different symptoms – the temporal region. When there is this type of brain wave dysregulation, the brain struggles with processing, organizing, and regulating information. It doesn’t matter if the information presented is in a book, or in a social situation, the child is struggling to make sense of what is being asked of them.
At Brain and Body of Norwalk, where we have been offering neurofeedback since 2010, we have observed a strong connection between reading comprehension difficulties and emotional regulation challenges. When the brain is dysregulated, children may struggle not only with learning, but also with behavior, emotional control, and day-to-day resilience.
Reading comprehension is much more than sounding out words. A child may read fluently and still not fully understand what they are reading.
To comprehend written language, the brain has to coordinate several functions at once:
A child must hold information in mind, connect ideas, follow the meaning of sentences, understand context, and remember what came before. If the brain is not efficiently organizing information, comprehension can break down.
This is why some children can read a passage out loud but cannot tell you what it meant. They may know the words, but the brain is not integrating the information well enough for true understanding.
When children have reading comprehension problems, emotional regulation issues are often present as well.
This does not always mean the child is upset because reading is hard. It can mean the same brain regulation challenges affecting comprehension are also affecting emotional control.

These patterns can show up during homework, but they can also show up outside of reading: during routines, family interactions, transitions, sports, school, social situations, or when limits are set.
That distinction is important. The emotional dysregulation is not always a response to reading. It may be a concurrent sign that the brain is having difficulty regulating information, emotion, and sensory input.
The temporal lobes are located on the sides of the brain, near the ears. These areas are involved in language, auditory processing, memory, emotional tone, and aspects of comprehension.
Because the temporal lobes help process sound, language, meaning, and memory, they play an important role in reading comprehension. Reading may look visual because words are on a page, but the brain still has to connect written symbols to language sounds and meaning.
The temporal regions are also closely connected with emotional processing. When temporal brain wave patterns are dysregulated, a child may have difficulty not only understanding language, but also managing emotional responses.

The two issues may look separate on the surface, but they may be connected through shared brain networks.
Brain waves are patterns of electrical activity in the brain. Different brain wave frequencies are associated with different states, such as focus, calmness, alertness, relaxation, or drowsiness.
Temporal brain wave dysregulation means that the brain wave activity in the temporal regions may be inefficient, unstable, overactive, underactive, or poorly coordinated with other areas of the brain.
This does not mean something is “wrong” with the child. It means the brain may not be regulating itself as efficiently as it could.

For some children, this can create a confusing picture. They may seem bright and capable in some ways, but immature, reactive, or inconsistent in others.

A child does not need to show every sign. But when reading comprehension problems and emotional regulation problems appear together, it may be worth looking at the brain’s regulation patterns more closely.
Children with this pattern are often misunderstood.
Their reading problems may be dismissed because they can technically read the words. Their emotional outbursts may be viewed as defiance, immaturity, or poor behavior. Their inconsistency may be interpreted as laziness or lack of motivation.
But many of these children are not choosing to struggle. Their brains may be working harder than expected to process language, regulate emotion, and stay organized.
A child may be able to decode words but not comprehend them.
A child may know the rules but still overreact.
A child may understand something one day and struggle the next.
A child may seem fine in one setting and completely overwhelmed in another.
These inconsistencies often point to regulation problems, not character problems.
Neurofeedback is a non-invasive form of brain training that helps the brain learn to regulate itself more efficiently.
During a neurofeedback session, sensors are placed on the scalp to monitor brain wave activity. The child receives real-time feedback through sound, video, or visual cues. When the brain moves toward more balanced patterns, it receives positive feedback.
Over time, the brain can learn healthier patterns of self-regulation.
Neurofeedback does not force the brain to change. It gives the brain information so it can begin to adjust on its own.
When reading comprehension problems and emotional regulation issues appear either in isolation or in tandem, neurofeedback may help by addressing the underlying regulation patterns that affect both learning and behavior.
If temporal brain wave dysregulation is present, neurofeedback can help support more stable activity in areas involved in language processing, auditory processing, memory, and emotional control.
This may help the brain process information more efficiently.
For children who have tantrums, overreactions, or difficulty calming down, neurofeedback can help the nervous system become more flexible and less reactive.
The goal is not to suppress emotion. The goal is to help the brain respond more appropriately to everyday challenges.
Reading comprehension is closely related to language comprehension. Children who struggle to process spoken information may also struggle to understand written information.
Neurofeedback can help support the brain systems involved in processing, organizing, and remembering language.
A dysregulated brain may have trouble holding information, sequencing ideas, and connecting meaning. Neurofeedback can help the brain become more organized, which can support learning readiness.
Neurofeedback does not teach reading. It does not replace tutoring, structured literacy, or educational intervention.
However, when the brain is more regulated, the child may be better able to benefit from reading instruction. They may be calmer, more focused, less reactive, and more available for learning.
Neurofeedback Is Not a Replacement for Reading Support
It is important to be clear: neurofeedback is not a reading program.
Children with reading comprehension difficulties may still need educational testing, reading instruction, comprehension strategies, vocabulary work, language support, or school accommodations. Neurofeedback often makes these others interventions much more effective.
Neurofeedback is most helpful as part of a broader plan, especially when reading comprehension problems occur alongside emotional regulation issues.

The goal is to address both the academic symptoms and the brain-based regulation patterns that may be contributing to them.
Parents may want to look beyond standard reading practice if their child:
When these patterns appear together, it may not be two unrelated problems. It may be one broader brain regulation issue showing up in different ways.
Instead of asking, “Why won’t my child just try harder?” it may be more helpful to ask:
What is making it difficult for my child’s brain to process information and regulate emotion?
This shift matters. It moves the conversation away from blame and toward support.
Children with reading comprehension and emotional regulation challenges often need help calming the brain, organizing information, and improving self-regulation. When those foundations improve, learning may become easier.
Reading comprehension and emotional regulation may seem like separate problems, but in many children, they are closely connected.
A child who struggles to understand what they read may also struggle to regulate emotions, tolerate frustration, process language, follow directions, and recover from everyday stress. These patterns may reflect temporal brain wave dysregulation or broader nervous system dysregulation.
